I prefer Dell to others. I have had Toshiba, HP and Compaq laptops in the past. Currently Dell is also installing a ghost image of the system that they are selling now, so if anything goes wrong with the software, you will be able to reset the system to the same as when you first purchased it. But, this will erase any information as well as programs you installed after you purchased it.

Well, it really depends on what you need from your laptop. Different brands offer different options for a user. I'd suggest researching all of the brands you mentioned and then looking at a couple others. Laptops range widely in price, size and function.

In my experience, Toshibas are not the most reliable (mine crashed after a couple of months) and neither are Sony VAIOs or Dells (same reason). I now have a Mac Book Pro from Apple and it hasn't given me any problems and its programs suit me very well since I'm a student. HPs are pretty good and Compaqs I've heard are pretty good (I had a very good Compaq desktop which I just retired due to it being outdated but it still runs like butter). It's really up to you

Compaq/HP/Macintosh.

Compaq and HP are the same now.

I love my Compaq R4000, but would have bought a Mac if they were more competitive in pricing.

Dell is terrible. They have a 90 day warranty for a reason.

Acer has flimsy designs.

Toshiba is WAY overpriced. (buy a mac, and SAVE money.)

I've owned/built computers since I was 13 years old. I'm 35 now. Worked in the IT industry. For your money HP/Compaq are currently building the best stuff. (This changes every few years. Used to be gateway, then it was Dell for a little while, now it's HP/Compaq.)

From experience with every brand of laptop, Sony, HP and Compaq are the worst, Dell is OK as long as you buy a higher end laptop. My favorites are toshiba tablets, and alienware laptops.

I haven't used many toshiba traditional laptops, but if they are nearly as good as their tablets, they are very good.

DELL! And I'd greatly recommned getting the Complete Care package, they'll take care of E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G that can possibly go wrong with it. I loves it!

Steer away from acer or compaq, yes they're cheap, but whatever money you just saved, you'll end up spending in repairs or lost work/time...

good luck!
