It was named after the inventor, Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling.

He felt that it would save lives - no kidding!

His reasoning was that the Civil War kept dragging on, and killed many soldiers, with no clear winner. By giving the North a superior weapon, he believed it would hasten the end of the war.

... and thus, saving lives.
.......................................
"A doctor in the Civil War notices all these soldiers dying both in battle of disease, and he wants to try to think of a way to save lives. He comes up with a most bizarre idea-invent a more efficient gun. If he can do that, he figures they won't need large armies. That will save lives. His name is Dr. Richard Gatling. He invents the gatling gun, the first machine gun. But the idea that it would save lives is long since dead."
