Qoute directly from Sun Java

"An applet is a program written in the Java programming language that can be included in an HTML page, much in the same way an image is included in a page. When you use a Java technology-enabled browser to view a page that contains an applet, the applet's code is transferred to your system and executed by the browser's Java Virtual Machine (JVM). For information and examples on how to include an applet in an HTML page, refer to this description of the tag."

Java applets can be good on a site because they lend interesting detail & interactivity like remembering your name or the date or bad because they can run destructive programs against your pc if not properly protected behind a firewall & virus protection that detects malicious code.

To other parts of an Internet software Java applet is like an object having the same status as a Flash on a page; but Java applet is obviously written in a programming language with more available programmatic options to it while Flash has geared more towards moving presentation on page.

It is like a program similar to ActiveX controls over streaming on the Internet; but unlike ActiveX a Java program without authenticity is ran with a protective layer to prevent it doing anything locally to your own computer that includes stopping it from deploying virus or any spyware. While ActiveX without authenticity merely warns you the possibility of such action in a program that is not authenticated.
