first combine like terms

8x and -2x=6x

Then add 18 to both sides of the equation

6x-18+18=21+18

6x=39

Now divide both sides by 6

x=39/6

Previous answers are correct. Do you know why?

First, you combine like terms, in this case 8x and -2x...

8x-2x-18 = 6x-18 = 21

Then you isolate the x term on one side and the numeric term on the other. In this case, this involves adding 18 to each side so that the negative-18 is removed from the left. If you perform the same operation on both sides, the equation remains true...

6x-18+18 = 21+18

Perform the mathematical operations and you get...

6x = 39

To isolate x, divide both sides by 6 (the multiplier of x on the left)...

x = 39/6 = 6.5

Don't feel bad. I didn't get it the first time thru either. I took algebra again 30 years later and aced it.

ok its easy. You need to get the x alone.
8x-2x-18=21
+18 to the 2, (you add 18 because it has a subtraction sign)
8x-2x=39
the 8 and 2 both have an x so you can subtract them
6x=39
divide the 6 from 39( you divide cuz the 6 is being multiplied to x)
x=6.5

I hope you understand it. Once you get the hang of it; it will become really easy. I love doing those problems!!

8x-2x-18=21

collect the "x"s into 1 group on the left

8x-2x=21+18

8x-2x=39

6x=39

x=39/6

8x-2x-18=21

6x - 18 = 21

6x= 21 + 18

6x = 39

x = 39/6

x = 13/2

x = 6 1/2

bring like terms together

8x - 2x = 21 + 18

then consolidate each type of term

6x = 39

then divide throughout by 6 to get the value for x

x = 39/6 = 13/2
