Easy or spontaneous bruisability is not uncommon, and there are many causes. Some are minor and transient, such as taking aspirin or aspirin-related drugs, which interfere with platelets and blood clotting. Some are more persistent and serious. Many times it will come and go and the cause is never known. In general, if the bruising is severe or persistent, or if it is accompanied by any other symptoms, one should see the doctor.

Given the other answers here, I should mention that Iron Deficiency Anemia does not cause easy bruising. Rather, it is the other way around. Bruising indicates a bleeding disorder, and is often accompanied by blood loss from other sites, such as heavy menses or black stools, indicating bleeding into the intestines. This blood loss causes the iron deficiency (since red blood cells are rich in iron). So, many with easy bruising will be found to be iron deficient, but the iron deficiency was not the cause of the bruising.

I recently had that problem. Lasted for several months. I'd get undressed and find bruises on my legs, arms, abdomen. I'd wake up with bruises. On more than one occasion I had them on the backs of my calves and they were pointed out by friends when I wore skirts. Very disturbing.

During a physical, my doctor found I was anemic. Increased my iron, no more bruising.

Yup 95% of the time it means your low on iron..either a pill or lots of green veggies high in iron will fix this...happens to me all the time...the other 5% of the time though, there is some underlining medical condition causing this..

It can happen due to changes in hormones, anemia, genetic conditions, prolonged use of cortisone-containing ointments, and other conditions.

It's probably nothing to worry about, but I'd see a doctor ASAP to find out why.

If you are having spontaneous bruising with no bumps or causes, it might be wise to see the Dr. It can be a sign of illness.
