Java is a type of language used... if something is using java script (some games, applications, web sites) you need it to run these programs. It helps you by making your pc able to run code in this language. It only really hinders you by taking up a very small amount of hard drive space. On the whole, it is free to have/use/download so there is no real harm in it.

Java is a total solution from machine to programs to framework to even the programming language used (minus the language restriction and you should get Microsoft .Net and its CLR).

Since there is no actual Java machine nor will there be one, the machine technology is designed to run on top of some other machine, be it a Windows, Mac, Linux, or whatever. Hence the term "virtual machine" that runs along side the host system underneath.

A virtual machine let you run Java programs; that is all it does, that's usually a positive part since virus and spybots are hard to create in Java.
