He hoped he could come up with sentences that would not make his poor vocabulary too conspicuous.

If you use the word 'filial' with the word 'relationship' it should be easy to make a sentence out of that one. You could talk about something's being in an obvious place for 'conspicuous.' 'Pensive' is usually used when describing someone's mood. That's all the help you'll get from me; it's YOUR homework, after all.
