We are a family of 5. Kids are 1, 5 & 6. Also what is the weather like late Sept/ Early Oct? Is it too hot for jeans? Too cool for shorts?

My bad...I meant Riverside or French Quarter. I am so ready for a vacation! LOL!

The weather will still be warm in October. I'm sure it won't be too hot for jeans or too cool for shorts. Bring both. You may want to wear shorts during the day and jeans in the evenings if it cools down. As for the Resorts, I'm not too sure. I always stay at Disney's Polynesian Resort. The Port Orleans Resort consists of two areas- French Quarter and Riverside. It used to be two different Resorts, and Riverside was known as the Dixie Landings Resort. I stayed at it back when it was Dixie Landings and it was pretty nice then. I imagine even though the name's changed and it's undergone some renovations in the past, it's still nice. Some of it is still the same, though. One house of rooms is called "Alligator Bayou," and that's where we stayed when it was Dixie Landings. Both the French Quarter and Riverside seem nice. French Quarter seems to be more popular. I hear a lot of people and friends say they really enjoy it there. There's a disadvantage to staying at the French Quarter, though. There's only one place to eat, the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory. If you'd like to have a full service meal, breakfast and dinner, you can walk to the Riverside to Boatwright's Dining Hall.

Use this website. There's fact sheets for each of the Resorts so you can compare, and see which has what you're looking for. There's also all kinds of other helpful information to help you plan your vacation...

Between the two resorts, I've only ever been to the Riverside and not the French Quarter. French Quater seems nice and I'm sure it's a great resort, but Riverside is my favorite resort on property. The resort itself is quite large and beautifully designed. The buildings are in the plantation style architecture of the South. It's a very quiet and relaxed resort, which is probably what you'll want with all the activities going on. The kids won't mind because there's a great swimming pool, boat rentals and fishing. Boatwrights is a nice family restaurant inside the main lobby building, with good southern food. There's also a quick service location next door with snacks and fast food type items.

Plus, with Riverside and French Quarter, you can use the shuttle boat to go to Downtown Disney for dinner or a movie. The shuttle buses will take you from the resort to the parks. Resort guests also get extra magic hours which let you stay in the parks later or get in earlier. There are a lot of nice advantages to staying at the resort.

As for the weather, it's usually pretty mild during that time period. Currently, it seems to be cooling off a bit. This week and next week it's only supposed to be as high as 90 degrees. In a few weeks the high should drop to 85. But it's been pretty nice in the evenings lately. Depending on where you live now and what temperatures you're used to, either shorts or pants would work. I wear jeans all the time, even during the summer, so it's hard for me to say. I would bring both just in case.

I've lived in Florida for 19 years... the weather will probably be mid to upper 80's, probably shorts weather, definitely not too cool unless something strange happens, probably a 1 in 10 chance of it being cool at all (cool is 70's' in Florida). I'm not totally familiar with the resorts at WDW... my favorites would probably be the grand floridian or the polynesian, but I've never really stayed in them... there was no need to. I don't know about riverside or port orleans, but you really can't go wrong, they're all very nice.

I should add that the two resorts i meantioned both have monorail service directly from the resort, which will be very handy to get to the parks, any other resort besides the contemporary requires a bus or a car.

Riverside, hands down. Port Orleans is considered a lot more dreary, and the bus service stinks over there. Besides, Riverside has a far better food court, a waterwheel, a sit-down restaurant, and a mini-mart, among other amenities.
As for clothing, I'd recommend capris for the girls, and shorts for the guys. It doesn't get all that cold down here, at any time. You may want to have a pair of jeans for a nice meal.

The weather is usually still warm! But like the other people said you may want jeans for at night when it cools down. As for the resorts I have never stayed at those two but my Grandparents stayed at Riverside when it was known as Dixie landings and it was very nice then. We did go there recently just to walk around and it is very nice. I think either would be fine, they both have nice pools and rooms! HAVE FUN!!

Ill be there The first week in OCT, I'M SO EXCITED!

You can expect warm - hot weather late this month and even into early October. Shorts are still recommended, but jeans are fine in the evenings. It won't cool down until mid November.
I recommend Port Orleans or the All Star for your family's stay. Both resorts are fun and great for kids.

Port Orleans is made up of 2 resorts-French Quarter and Riverside. french quarter is nice because it's smaller, easier to get from room to pool, restaurant, etc. has a fun pool with a sea serpent slide. riverside is bigger, more spread out. it's very relaxing with lots of trees. they have trundle beds in some of the rooms at riverside, this might be a good idea for a family of five. when you stay at port orleans you can use the pools at both resorts.
also, definitely shorts in october. you might want a light jacket in case you get cold in the restaurants

You should go to the Walt Disney World website and do a comparison of the resorts. They have virtual tours of the lobby, pools, rooms...you can get a better feel of which would appeal to you more.

When I go I like to use the value resorts simply because I don't spend much time at the room, so why use a more expensive one. You, on the other hand with so many small children, will probably have some short days at the parks and will be spending some evenings at the resort.

Have a great time!!

Where shorts also the kids might like the pool area and such at the Port Orleans resort. My family and I stay at one resort and take the bus to the other resorts to check them out and swim in the different pools because each one has a different theme and really elaborate decor and such. Plus it will keep the kids occupied for awhile. My personal favorite is the Animal Kingdom resort (you will love it and see basically the park animals) and also check out Blizzard Beach water park super cool. Good Luck. PS the only reason I would bring pants is for the mosquito's at night not the weather.

I don't know about those resorts, but I would think the weather would still be warm enough for shorts. We went this first week in Nov 2 years ago and it got pretty warm in the afternoon. It was cool only in the evenings.
