Network Help!?

I Want to transfer files from my old computer to my new computer by connecting them together directly using the ethernet ports. but when I connect them together and try to setup the network it says it was succesful. but when I go to my network places it does not show up. please tell me how, give me a web site, or tell me what i'm doing wrong.

You need a crossover cable or plug both into a switch.You also need to assign IP addresses to each on the same subnet
