Do people subconsiously feel the need to suffer in their own lives, in order to live?

Hi Tsuga. Good question and a very subtle one. I think many (if not most) people have an internalized feeling that they need to make amends somehow. In other words, they need to make up for their mistakes. Atone for their sins. Not everyone feels this, but most do. So their personal suffering can be justified as this indirect "making up" what they did or how they acted. This guilt is woven into our many cultures in different ways. Some cultures are very guilt laden while others are not. The more strict the culture, the more likely the number of people who feel they need to suffer, even if that makes no sense.

To suffer is to be human. That is the way of human nature. There will always be a war somewhere and death and pain.
No matter where you are, what time of the earth is, someone somewhere is suffering.

Its human nature. Its God giving humans the right to run their lives.

Sorrow is but one thread in the tapestry of human emotions. It's very yin-yang: I don't think you can have perpetual happiness without sorrow, or perpetual sorrow without happiness. As complex minds taking in a constant flux of varying experiences, sorrow is just one of many states of mind. Sometimes it's what our minds change to, sometimes it's what our minds change from. But as the saying goes, the one constant in life is change.
