When you see a sequence like this

10 9 8 7 6 5 4

It means that the book you have is the 4th printing of an edition.

10 9 8 7 6

the 6th printing, and so on, they knock out a number to designate this when a book has a new printing run (actually the same edition/version of the publication; if there is a new edition, say paperback from hardback, new material etc. they start over at 1).

You mean the ISBN? It's the identification number of the book so it can be looked up from anywhere in the country.
