Information in a computer is stored in bytes. The smallest "bit" is 8 digits, represented by 0's and 1's [known as binary]. Different systems stores with different bit numbers, some are 16, some are 32, and newer computers are 64 and more.

The most basic is 0's and 1's, on and off, yes or no, open or closed. Computers read these streams and snipplets of bytes to show you whatever you want shown.
