A prime numbers cannot be divided by any number but 1 and itself. Hence 1 is not prime, because it's only got itself.

4 has 1, 2, and 4 so it's "composite."

Incidentally, 1 use to be considered a prime number, but modern mathematics is so exacting that 1 no longer fits the description EXACTLY. (Note the word "and.")
