The incorrect use of 'your' instead of 'you're'?
Boize = boys, etc.
Or the pronunciation of 'because' as 'becuz'?

It drives me nuts. I keep saying English is a dying art, because it seems to be exactly that. And then, when people actually get nasty and defend their right to sound like an imbecile, I can't even believe it. How can sounding ignorant possibly be something worth defending? I don't understand at all.

I've got a Master's Degree in English, but I don't think I'm a stick in the mud. This is an informal site, and I don't expect people to spell and punctuate everything perfectly. Good grammar is nice, too, but as long as I can understand what's being said, I'm O.K. with a few goofs here and there.

But when it takes me longer to figure out the question than it does to answer it, that's when I get frustrated. Chatspeak is, in my somewhat less than humble opinion, a wart on the rump end of the English language. ARGGHH!!

I absolutely hate it. Especially when it is someone asking for help on a homework assignment. They obviously need to get off the computer and start reading their textbooks. How can you mess up when every time you type a reply (not sure about questions, I haven't asked any yet) you have a "check spelling" function offered right above the place you are typing and you must preview your reply before you submit it. Actually the preview function also annoys me because it takes up time (I have dial up) and I take care when I'm typing to try to make sense and spell correctly.

Yes it gets on my nerve when people do this because the message gets screwed, and most of the times I don’t know what people are talking about. When I write, I always use the correct pronunciation. My sister asked me the other day, why don't I use short versions or Ebonics when I text message her. It because I like correctly spelling my words, and when I send e-mails or write on here. I do it in Microsoft Word first, then cut and past.

Yes. It drives me nuts because it is so hard to read.
Lazy spellers show a lack of intelligence and/or pride in themselves. Too bad too. If I were going to hire someone I would quickly dismiss the ones who wouldn't put the effort into clear communication. I would pick someone who could spell and cared enough about themselves, about clear communication and about playing by some very basic rules, like spelling correctly.

It's not the spelling or even the slang spelling that troubles me. It's the total combination of bad grammar, punctuation plus the spelling that makes it so hard to understand the concept of the message. I can't tell for sure if it's laziness or done on purpose.

I have to agree with you. Language allows people to communicate and I find some of the short forms, acronyms and misspellings make it near impossible to decipher what is being asked or stated. In some cases you cannot even tell if a sentence is a question or a statement.

It does lead one to invent new word games. "Find the meaning."

Especially on Yahoo Answers. Its the age groups, each talking to the other and thinking it must be cool. Back in the Stone Age, it was necessary to read, write and spell properly. If you didn't you were thought to be of a lower class. See what democracy has done?

I'm amazed at how many misspellings I see at YA. Seems like almost 50% of the questions and answers have spelling or grammatical errors, and I'm not even referring to intentional substitutions like "becuz". It's annoying.

I get so mad! My ex was older than me (over 18), but obviously not too bright. He spelled beautiful as "butifle". He spelled the easiest 5 letter words that you use everyday wrong! I wanted to send him a dictionary.
