Probably DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) either an arcade or console (with a dance pad you plug into a controller port) game. Arrows come up on a screen and you put your foot on the corresponding square of the pad. If you do it right it looks sorta like dancing... just a bit.

If it had nine spaces on it and they were watching a screen with music and arrows, it was a game called Dance Dance Revolution.

In Dance Dance Revolution you hit the floor pad with your feet to match the arrows on the screen and perform the dance moves as directed.

You get a workout doing the dance, and get scored by the game.

Sometimes you are playing against the system, sometimes against another player. It's a lot of fun, and there are a lot of different patterns and songs programmed into the systems for variety.
