What is eternality?

Seems like a lot of honest answers here. I believe there must be some things that are eternal. Are there energies that are eternal? Are there intelligent beings that are eternal? If we can't figure out the logic in this then it becomes a faith issue.

If in reference to the source as an all-pervading energy and root of the created, then I'd say yes, that eternality is a constant behind everything that is given form. But in reference to the created form that is subject to the will of the underlying and all-pervading intelligence, then that form is always on a journey of change and therefore temporal. I think eternality will only have greater significance to the permanent nature of the intelligence underlying all expressions of that force. Just my 2 cents.

Existence can be eternal. Not the existence of any one particular object, just the state--the concept--of existence itself. The matter in our universe probably isn't eternal, though it would last a VERY long time; see link below.

It is worth noting, however, that the very concept of eternity is one grounded in the concept of time--eternity just means an infinite amount of time. But while there may be eternity into the future, the strong scientific consensus is that our universe had a finite past.

The big bang was not an explosion of matter & energy INTO space; it was an explosion OF space itself. Before it there was no space, but there was also no time. Space & time are both things which began when our universe began.

So prior to the big bang, there was no space and no time. Talking about either before the big bang is both moot and meaningless. Therefore, even the notion of eternity is one native to our universe. Where time doesn't exist, neither can eternity.

Eternal is a dimension like infinite....it goes off the scale of measurability. Eternal deals with time,or lack of it while infinity deals with space,or lack of it. Eternal is forever, with or without time. It is the pace keeper of what was before and what will be when it's over. In a way, eternal is contradictory since it exceeds its own dimension. (time being the interval between Event A and Event B.) If nothing happens, time is at a standstill. If there is nothing around to occur, whether it does or doesn't, there can be no time. But, eternity, by definition, goes on and on and on. Now, can anything be eternal? The energy-matter duality can be eternal as long as there is motion (events) happening. If all motion ceases, time as well ceases and likely the Universe will disappear.

Sadly, nothing in existence can ever be eternal, even though many would yearn for such an everlasting feeling. I feel...everything would be able to shift into a more perfect balance with eternity but, due to constant change and progressions in existence, such an effect is so rarely experienced. This raises many other issues which I need not delve further into but on a very simple, less intricate note, almost nothing is eternal...except for those few things that matter to you that, in a way, they never leave you...

Eternal, static, unchanging life... sounds like hell to me. It's stagnation, pure and simple. People that claim to want eternal life don't usually consider the implications of it, that with eternal life come infinite tedium.

They tend to dismiss it with a statement like "We'll all be made happy by God." Or "We don't know what it will be like, but I have faith that everything will be fine forever."

I wonder if energy is eternal. Current theory holds that everything is made from energy. So energy just changes form, but is it eternal???
