Upgrading from a current 5th gen, no it offers better battery life and a brighter screen as well as a few other goodies, neither I see being completely necessary at all unless you are into watching a lot of movies on your Ipod. But for a new purchase sure it's a great and easy to use player.

wait for the Zune.
the Zune is Microsoft's answer to the ipod - it'll have a 3.5" lcd (bigger than ipod), built in am/fm radio, 400mhz processor, and 30gigs.
it'll have wi-fi capabilities too, and it's only $299.00.
