Elfen Lied was an awesome anime series, highly recommend that.
The best thing to do to watch animes is to get fansub torrents, they're free and you're not a criminal for downloading them.
The current ongoing series that I like right now are...
Blood +
Night Head Genesis
Bleach
Innocent Venus
And i'll watch Naruto again when the fillers are over.
and definitely check out Elfen Lied.
http://www.baka-updates.com is a good tracker for alot of anime torrents being hosted on different fansubs.
Bleach and Naruto are hosted on http://yhbt.mine.nu/t/
Just my 2 cents.

I loved Howls Moving Castle! What a great anime! I understand not wanting to buy and then hate it! With anime DVDs costing upwards of $25 for 3 eps, it kind of sucks!
Naruto is really awesome, but the only problem is that the anime caught up to the manga and the show has been "filler" eps (meaning not following the manga) for over a year now. It has comedy, action, drama, etc.
I really, really recommend Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Desiny. Gundam Seed is available in 3 "movies" that summarize the series, but it does an accurate job. It is 50 eps, 10 DVDs, so it really can be pricey.
Check out these links for reasonably priced anime!

Since you like gory stuff, you can try Hellsing, it's like vampire hunter D except it's a bit more gory, I think. There's one called Kimera (contains a bit of yaoi), but some scences are pretty bloody. Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) is coneceptually dark, but doesn't have a lot of bloody scenes. Also, there's Petshop of Horror too. And of course, all Miyazaki's animes are deep, so they're good to watch. You can see most of these on Youtube if you don't want to buy them. But Amazon and ebay sometimes have good deals, you just have to wait for the cheap stuff. Hope that helps!

(Ghibli made both Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle)
For anime with a Ghibli feel try:
Kamichu! - (16eps) lincensed and torrents are hard to find but this anime is a lot like Spirited away you'll love it
Petopeto-san - (13eps) not sure if its licensed but you can find the torrents easily and its a great anime
Mushishi - (26eps) stand-alone episodes mostly but the anime's great and not yet licensed so download while you can.
Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke are other two Ghibli movies that you might like, specially Princess Mononoke.
For action check
Naruto -(199+eps)
One Piece -(270+eps)
Ergo Proxy -(23eps)
Full Metal Alchemist -(51eps+movie)
Samurai Shamploo -(26eps)
Gunslinger Girl -(13eps)
Ghost in the Shell -(movie+SAC[26eps]+movie+SAC2[26eps])
new movie coming out soon
Read or Die (R.O.D) - (3OAV + 26eps)

I like Mermaid Melody and Detective Conan the best, but since you're a guy you would probably like Bleach and maybe Detective Conan. I would suggest Bleach to you and say," Stay away from Naruto and Inuyasha," cause I really hate those.

I only own 2 animes: Vampire Hunter D and Akira, but I'm saving up for Samurai Champloo so that I can get my Mugan fix. I saw Spirited Away, it was pretty good.

Yup! that's true.. you should be wise in choosing what anime to buy.. coz you can't just return it in the store and refund it.. so it would be good watching anime online first.. here is the link where you find a lot of anime streaming online.. there's a lot of it so I don't think you would be having problems anymore on what to buy..
