There's no universal rule, but I've never met a good teacher who didn't like to talk to students about the subject they teach. And generally speaking, one of the things that makes a good teacher is liking to interact with kids of whatever age they teach, so most good teachers will usually like to talk to their students about other things as well. But you can annoy just about anyone if you try to start a conversation when they're busy with something else and don't give up when they don't want to talk to you. And there are plenty of teachers out there who are just not very nice people. But in general, I'd say that yes, teachers do like when a student starts a conversation with them.
BTW, at the college level, virtually all professors love to talk about their research.

I was a teacher and I love it when any of my students started a conversation with me, even though the conversation topic had nothing to do with the subject I taught.
I don't know about other teachers though because I think each person is different, some may hate it, some may like it, and some may love it. And it also depends on the timing, when the teacher was seen rush to something, s/he may not like it when anyone would want to start a convo with them (not only students).
Fyi, teacher's pay rate in my country sux, yet I love teaching, money was not the main priority in why I like teaching and I'm Chinese btw.

I can't see why a teacher wouldn't like a student initiating a conversation. Interaction is important in learning. The only issue is the conversation itself. Some teachers prefer to keep them on a more professional level, focusing only on class material and problems. Others don't mind conversations on unrelated topics outside of class, such as what's happening in their lives, family, etc.
As a teacher, we deal with people, and conversing is just part of the job. But as teachers, we do have to walk a fine line between what we consider appropriate conversation and what isn't. Sometimes, that line is clear--no sex talk! But other times, it's a personal choice that's up to that particular teacher.
However, knowing our students is a great way to reach them and help them learn because they'll feel more comfortable with us, and we'll feel more comfortable with them.

uh! i don't think so. because the teacher is just cared about a job and being paid. they don't cared about the student. once you're gonna finish the class , then they will say no. yeah! maybe there might be some good teacher who is willing to help you out of the trouble. i mean not trouble, but some problems. i have only two teacher who is always helping me . Rest of them are strict and rude. some Chinese teacher started to with Chinese student in Chinese language. i had big problem that semester. I'm like I'll never have that teacher again. i mean i can't understand what they are trying to say. I'm out of Chinese.

I teach primary school and I love when my students start a conversation with me; out of content area instructional time of course. It gives me an opportunity to create a relationship with my student, which helps to know how to teach them better. We all do not learn the same way, it has a lot to do with how we are. If I do not have a "relationship" with them it will take me a long time to teach them the best way I can.

Teachers probably like student interactions, but like to get their work done too. If you get the brush off, don't take it personally, they may be rude or they may be busy, But whole really cares. You have your friends. And why would who want to suck up to a teacher for marks for anyways. The teachers can spot this a mile away. If you have something you really want to say, great, but go out and be with your own friends. I would never be a Teacher's assistant. I would let them do thier own work. They are getting paid and you aren't.
