No body dies, it just interferes with the electrical equipment. Don;t worry they have them all rigged up with warning bells in case anything goes wrong!!
If you can get away with it, do it!

Mobile phones can THEORETICALLY interfere with sensitive electronic equipment in the same way that a mobile phone can THEORETICALLY create a spark that could ignite petrol vapour at a petrol station.
However, have you EVER heard of an instance of either of these 2 things happening?
Have you noticed that doctors, nurses, admin staff etc. all use their mobile phones inside the hospital? They do!
There is a theory that the mobile phone / hospital story was put around so that the hospital would make more profit from payphones. I wouldn't be suprised if that was the case.

The doctors I work with have their's switched on during their ward rounds so not sure. But also know that when I have my mobile switched on to the left of my PC (I'm not based at a hospital by the way) it crashes when someone leaves a message so there could be some truth in it.

It's a complete myth that mobiles interfere with equipment. Absolute twaddle.
What about doctors' pagers? They work on RF. What about porters' two-way radios? They work on RF. What about WiFi connections on staff laptops and PCs? That's all RF. What about the radios and sat navs in ambulances. They work on RF and don't stop the equipment in the ambulance working
What about the space outside a hospital. Do the RFs from phones and relay masts 'see' a hospital and suddenly go round the outside of it? Of course they don't.
They put that story about so they don't have wards full of patients and visitors bawling into mobiles. Plus, most of the bedside TV/phone setups in hospitals are installed by cable companies who want money from the use of the phones, and the hospital get their share of it too.
Same with petrol stations, they don't want people standing at the pumps having mobile conversations, they want them to fill-up, pay-up, and fu*ck off.
Interfere with equipment... my arrse!!

It is not a myth, these phone do interfere with signals of highly sophisticated life preserving machines. The best thing to do is switch it off when you're in the hospital and pop outside every now and again to make your calls and check for voice mails. Everyone that is in the hospital is there for a reason. You just need to think about others as well as your own crisis.

It probly didnt do anything but it does interfere with all electronic equipment. To see how much yours does, turn on a radio, place the phone near a radio and call from another phone, you may hear noise. If not try near the speaker. Some phones are worse then others, nextel inteferes the most.

It's not exactly a myth.
It's a precaution because of the rare occasion it could seriously interfere with hospital equipment that is keeping people alive, or create false readings in hospital measuring equipment.
But they do have other precautions in place, since they're not going to rely on trusting people to remember to switch their phones off.
After all, in the USA hospital doctors use pagers for emergencies all the time.
It is also so patients aren't disturbed by ringing phones all the time.

I don't use my phone inside a hospital just in case. But it makes me wonder what the hospital walls are made of, cos it's OK to use mobiles right outside the front door.
Thought - It's probably dangerous because if you annoy someone with a phone ringing all the time they might clock you one. But at least you'd be in the right place.

its a not a myth, but it is hyped up a lot. the reason they dotn want you to use it is because it can interfear with teh delicate equipment that the hospitals use. as for petrol stations its the same doesnt mean you will get more fuel for the money though as it could work the other way and you get less fuel

Well it is mostly myth but in somecases it can interfere w/ certain equipment due to radio frequency emmitted by the cell phone itself. I truly suggest that you use a ground phone while in the hospital but if it is necessary you may use a cell phone, best if in the waiting area and not around electromagnetic and wave frequency sensitive equipment.
