Much of the detail work would depend upon what type of ship, but the over-all process is similar.

The first step is to get a good drawing or photograph of the ship you want to model. This need to be good enough to show at least some detail.

The easiest materials to work are Styrofoam or balsa wood. Both can be shaped by using a rasp, file or sand paper. Any good craft store should have a variety of shapes.

Use the rasp to approximate the shape of the bow and the stern. Try to get both side symmetrical. Use coarse then fine sandpaper to smooth the work.

Add masts or superstructure by gluing onto the shell. Allow glue to set and then remove excess. Sand again if needed and then paint. Yard arms and sails can then be added or ports and antennae for modern ships.

If the model is to be used in water, you will need to hollow out a place on the bottom of the hull and place weights there. Glue into place with waterproof glue and paint when the glue dries.

From scratch? probably not. There are plenty of kits out there, though, that come with all the parts and directions to follow that you should probably start with. Once you've made a few kits and know all the parts and hwo they are shaped, how they fit, etc, then you can move on to building one from scratch
