That's the same age my son was last Halloween. We just went to visit friends and family and instead of trick or treating we took a picture with each of them and him in his costume then we gave them a copy and kept one for ourselves.

Hi Crystal

I was asked this same question recently and my answer was that you have to be careful, but that your son will appreciate and take in all the exciting sights of Halloween. Even if you don't take him out he will enjoy seeing the trick-or-treaters coming to his house.

Here's the full answer I gave to the question. I hope it is useful.

Your toddler’s first Halloween is an exciting time for both of you. It is their first introduction to this extraordinary holiday so you want to make it something special. Keep in mind that some small children scare very easily so be careful what you expose your child to the first time they celebrate Halloween. You do not want to make them afraid of this holiday, but instead make it a fun and exciting time.

You can not celebrate your child’s first Halloween without having the perfect Halloween costume for your toddler. They make many great costumes for this age group. Below is listed a few of the most popular toddler Halloween costumes sold on the market today.

Pumpkins
Lady bugs
Elephants
Skunks
Devils
Angels
Super heroes

When choosing a costume for your toddler you should take into consideration their personality along with what they can be comfortable wearing.

Have you been wondering what to do with your toddler on Halloween? Just because your child is young does not mean they can not enjoy the custom of trick or treating. You can get together with friends who have children around the same ages and all go out together. It will also give you an excuse to show off your Halloween costume to all the neighbors.

If the local fire department or other establishments in your area are giving away candy for Halloween this is a great place to take your toddler. Even though they may not completely understand the concept of Halloween they will enjoy the dressing up and all the wonderful treats they keep getting.

It would be best to not take your toddler to an adult or teen party. These could be very overwhelming for a toddler and can cause them to be frightened. Although, if you are hosting a party you could designate a special room of the house for the guest of this age group to gather together with the appropriate supervision. It is not a good idea to allow your toddler to go trick or treating with older children without adult supervision. This could be very dangerous and could also cause the child to become upset.

Dress him up, take some pictures, and take him to trick or treat at friend's and families' homes only. It's not worth it to do more since they can't even eat the candy. Last year my daughter who was almost 1 1/2 could only handle trick or treating at 3 or 4 houses.

We dressed our two month old in a costume last halloween, and went out trick-or-treating with a friend of ours and her kids. We didn't bother getting any candy (we weren't going to eat it...) but it was fun and in the holiday spirit, and our baby loves going for walks, so she was happy.

I don't think I would have gone if we were just alone, though.

I took my son trick-or-treating when he was only a year old.

I say GO for it! I'd say take them at any age, even if they are newborns, just as long as the babies are dressed properly for the weather, and the neighborhood is good, GO FOR IT! ;-)

I say take them even if they aren't old enough for candy, or you don't allow them junk food. As long as they have the experience.

Myself, I go trick-or-treating in the malls. I live in a Chicago southeastern suburb, and there are malls close to me I can get candy instead of door-to-door.

My son was that age too for his first Halloween. I dressed him in a cute pumpkin costume that I found at Target. I took tons of pictures, put him in the stroller & we went to the people we know in our mobile home park. Even though he doesn't remember, I do & that's important. He loves hearing about the Halloweens he can't remember & will be 10 years old in 2 months. After we visited our friends, he helped my mom pass out candy. We were living with her then & I have cherished pictures of him with his hand in the candy bowl & one of him with his hand outstretched to put the candy in a neighbor kid's bag. He'd drop it in & yell Yay! It was soo funny.

I say take him, but only go to family and a few close friends. My daughter will be 8 months this Halloween and that's what we plan on doing with her. Just enough time for the grandparents, aunts, uncles, to take some pics and back home we go.

My daughter is will be 10 months old for Halloween too.. I'm just taking her to houses on my block and then on the AF base since they have activities set for them.
This is a memory you can always remember so who cares if they are young and can't walk. They look adorable in their costume too!

Good Luck!
