Like what countries would have a low rate of kidnappings/killings targeted at american tourists?

Kidnappers want money - so if you don't strut around and look rich (Rolex, etc.) you won't be targeted. If you are a 'normal tourist' or backpacker - who would want to kidnap you?

Any major European country is fine (you will blend in) and they don't care about you. South America, Africa, and Middle East are more risky. Asia is pretty safe (Singapore and Japan are the safest!) but Indonesia and Philippines is a little risky (but safe). In general - just use common sense and don't go to Iraq or places where they kidnap people and blow things up.

There are lots of countries a lot safer and less crime than America.
A few years back, I had my car boot emptied out just by parking overnight along the roadside when I stayed in a hotel without a carpark in New York City. Also felt very dangerous and nervous when going through the poorer area in US.
Why not go to Singapore, where they have very strict laws and enforcements, and low crime rate. Even lone females can walk around at night. Great place for families too.
No worries being an american in Singapore as it is multi-racial and very cosmopolitan.

Any country where the majority of people are white (ie of European decent) and the language spoken is English. For example, Australia is a great place for Americans to visit. The standard of living is virtually the same, you can drink the water, you can understand what the locals are saying, and chances are you will already have some distant relatives living there.

The worst that can happen to Amercians in Australia is to get laughed at. Other than that, you'll have a ball.

Yeah its sounds weird but the more strict the government is, the more control they have over their people so the less likely it is you will be the target of a crime. I felt 10 times safer walking around in Beijing than I did in New York.

Sabah, Malaysia. You can go to Mt. Kinabalu take some cool fresh air. Most of the islands there are also beautiful and clean.
