How do you know when a car overheats? My temp gauge on my 63 newport goes all the way into the danger zone. Is something supposed to blow? I have never had a car overheat. The hoses have good pressure, new w.p. therm., and another new sender. Help

Antique time is the water temp actually getting that hot? Do you see water blowing out the overflow tube? Modern technicians have digital inferred pyrometers and can measure the temp at the thermostat housing and top tank of the radiator with out pulling the cap off. Pressure is also important raises the boiling point. Old Newport with the small V-8 ran at about 185 degrees. If problem persists remove the radiator and take it to the radiator shop for a good tanking rod out and re soldering before all the radiator shops are gone. Fan If I remember is four blade bolted directly to the water pump. Let Yamsters know how it gos and a little more how when and at what speed might help narrow it down closer.

Your car will indeed overheat when left running in the "danger" zone. Cars do endure the high temperature until meltdown occurs.

If you had a new thermostat installed, I believe you had one that is too hot installed. Your 63 may use something like 165 instead of 185. Both will fit and the hotter will show your temperature gauge in the red.

Try a cooler thermostat. There are plenty to choose from at stores like Kragen, Checker, Autozone, etc.

if it realy overheats it'll be blowing water out of the radiator , sounds like you have a bad temp. sensor, take it to a shop and get it checked out

that's not normal for it,,it may have a stopped up radiator on it,,you may have to take it off and have it cleaned out good,,it should run a little cooler than that,,with a bad radiator it will still circulate the water,,it just wont do it as fast as it should to keep it cool,,i hope you find it good luck,, maybe this will help.
