they dont fit any of the charateristics of life.
They dont cosume expel repoduce or grow.

There are any number of traits that are ascribed to living things... your salt crystal has some of them, but not all of them by a long shot.
Of course, the crystal does have SOME of those qualities: it has a complex structure, it consumes energy, and it has a capacity to grow, and perhaps to reproduce (if you break it up, anyway).
In addition, all living things that we know of are cell-based, they are filled with carbon-based molecules and water, they respond to stimuli and are able to adapt to their environment over generations through natural selection.
