It's a water powered A/C unit; basically cold water is pumped throughout the building and then it goes through a fan unit that blows out the cold air. For the last few months, it was beeping every few minutes. Got annoying, talked to the super and he had someone come look at it. The guy told me "It's a fire alarm.. needs a new battery." Well, I had already thought about that and checked all of them; definitely not a fire alarm. I finally tracked the noise down to the A/C unit, stuck my head up into the trap panel and I'm positive it's coming in or near it. Finally, we gave up since all the "professionals" who came to look at it were stumped, but now it's a shrill alarm sound and it's driving us crazy. Once again, the super is no help at all. It basically sounds like a security alarm panel when it's signalling that a door/window has been left open. Kind of a high pitched "eeeeeeeeeeee..." noise non-stop. Please someone tell me you know what it is.

It does it even when the unit is turned off; I even shut off every breaker to our unit... the alarm kept going.

IT IS A BATTERY ALARM ON THE PAN OF THE AIR HANDLER IT IS TELLING YOU THAT THE EMERGENCY OVERFLOW PAN IS FULL OF WATER AND THAT YOUR CONDENSATION DRAIN IS CLOGGED. IF YOU CAN LOCATE THE PVC PIPE OUTSIDE THAT IS YOUR DRAIN HOOK A WET DRY VAC TO IT AND SUCK OUT THE SLIME CAUSING THE BLOCKAGE OR CALL THE AC COMPANY TO DO IT. BUT IF YOU DON'T DO SOMETHING FAST YOUR PAN WILL OVERFLOW ONTO THE SHEETROCK AND CAUSE DRYWALL DAMAGE. TO TURN OFF THE ALARM LOCATE THE AIR HANDLER IN YOUR ATTIC AND REMOVEIT FROM THE WATER BUT REMEMBER TO PUT IT BACK LATER

If you disconnected its' power and the noise is continuing, I think it has to be another source. Is there a water pump up there or perhaps a fan belt on another unit near by? How about an attic ventilator? Your description sounds like a bearing to me but kind of hard to diagnose from here. You may have to have the super keep investigating until it is corrected. I'm sure he doesn't want to pay for a night or two at the Hilton for you and family..

Your calling the wrong people, Call 911, Tell them you hear an alarm going off in your unit and you don't know where its coming from. I assume they will call the fire department, But it will be found and fixed. The problem sounds to me like a problem with the a/c coil itself being clogged in some way. Even with the power cut off to the unit, You still have water circulating through it, Drop the panel to your a/c and look for the water line cut off valves. Cut them off and listen.

It possibly could be your water regulator valve in the unit that is not shutting off completely. The high pressure through the orifice may be causing the sound...

It sounds as if it has everything to do with the fan belt that turns the unit.. too loose and/or just needs a new fan belt
