A friend of mine got fired from his job and is having a hard time finding a new job. He suspects that his boss is illegally telling potential job offerees more then he is supposed to. I have agreed to call his boss and pretend that I am in HR for a job he has applied to and find out. Does anybody do this sort of thing for a living and can help me choose exactly what I should say?

I think you may find his boss (as long as he is telling the truth) is legally allowed to tell anybody who calls for a reference exactly what your friend did or did not do while working for him.

If he's lying that's a different matter and your friend could sue for slander.
