truckers/machanics? how do i really KNOW that Im getting a good tire? & what's the best route across the US?

Im driving across the US (Va to Utah) and im going to get new tires, tune up... before I go. How do I KNOW for sure that I'm getting the tires I need & that they REALLY are good tires (without spending a fortune). I also would like info on the best roads to travel? (the less mountains the better!) and I'd really like to know the safest and shortest routes. Any other info you think might be helpful? Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help! Go to tirerack.com...they've got user reviews on tires. As far as the route, take the road less traveled. You'll see more.
