Phones are like computers. When they are switched on they are always working, talking to the nearest transmitters and to the phone network. They can sometimes get themselves in a mess like a PC and need a reboot from time to time. Of course some phones are better than others. The more simple a phone is the more reliable it is likely to be. The more complicated modern phones can crash unfortunately.

It shouldn't be a regular thing though. If your phone crashes a lot when you are just doing simple things like making calls or texting it could well be faulty and should be replaced under warranty.
