Lovely question(s), Moon. I intend to answer both your male and female fave singers queries. :)

As I've previously provided favourite song (and artist) lists elsewhere on this site, I'll just stick to the vocalists, okay?

Okay, I have to start this list with my very favourite female singer-songwriter of all time: Kate Bush. She is just exquisite in every sense of the meaning of that word and I've had a serious crush on her since I was 14. I adore Kate and all she has contributed to the musical and artistic worlds. Beautiful!

I must also confess to being in love with Enya, literally from the first moment I heard her sublime and ethereal voice, some 17-18 years ago. She is magnificently gifted, radiantly beautiful and ranks right beside Kate on my personal favourites list. Amazing!

I'm also very partial to Sarah McLachlan, whose voice and music possess that earnest quality so many try but fail to capture... Natalie Merchant is another favourite of mine, though I'm hearkening back to her 10,000 Maniacs days... Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays (remember them?) sings as adorably as she looks... I'm very fond of Dido's exceptional vocal range, as well... And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Beth Orton (see my male vocalist answer) and newcomer K.T. Tunstall.

Now, if you're looking for some real divas, I would have to mention Celine Dion. I may not care for her style of pop music but, my goodness, can she belt out a song! She can't be more than five fee tall and 100 pounds but she has as powerful (and beautiful) a voice as I've ever heard... I really like Sade's voice and wonder what she's been up to (assuming she's still recording)... Sheila Chandra (formerly of Monsoon) has a lovely voice, though I don't imagine most here will have heard of her. Pity, that.

Honourable mentions must go out to the following: Virtually ALL of the awesome Motown "girl groups," most notably Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector... Carole King was amazing in her prime... Annie Lennox can still belt them out as well as Celine (see above)... And although her voice is pretty average, no one LOOKS better while singing than Shania Twain. Canadian girls. Oh yeah! ;-)
