bleach will work great. take a space heater with you with this project. take off the paper after cutting it to fit too, and hold it in front of the heater this will help get the glue activated rather than just be like a sticker cause after time these will lose their glue. the heater will help make the glue gummier. i also suggest getting a thing of tile glue and using a floor comb too

What you do to prepare the floor depends on the type of floor. Cement you handle one way, and wood another. We'll assume you're going over wood.

Wood floors must be not only free from loose dirt but also embedded dirt. You can try cleaning the wood with a good cleaner (Bleach? Oh puleeeeze!) Use a good cleaner which will not break down the fibers in the wood. You want a light solvent. If the wood on the floor is not a flat surface you may want to consider sanding so that the floor is smooth (and level)
Floors which are not flat may be leveled with some special stuff you can get at Home Depot. It's like a cement putty which you mix up and immediately trowell into place. THis is good for holes, cracks and the like. These imperfections will transfer to the tile over time and make them come loose.

Always buy extra tiles, as they can come loose over time. Replace the tiles either by glueing them down with a good floor cement or with a fresh new tile.

Just remove all the dust and dirt so it will stick...maybe a little sanding in some spots, but thats really it ......going over the surface with a shopvac helps too

It really doesn't matter how clean your floor is, they will come loose/slide over time. Especially where the chairs sit. Cleanliness is the key to make them last longer.

Just sweep and a damp mopping and that's more than sufficient.
