It seems to be another way in which to say "Hey Brent!" though I cant be certain. What is the word he is using and what are its origins?

The word is 'Oi'

Oi, is a British and Australian working class slang interjection used to get someone's attention, or to express surprise or disapproval.

Oi meaning Hey you.!
Used to get somebodies attention.
It is used in South Africa too. Goodness just assumed it was world wide expression.

It's an abreviation of the old navel term "Ahoy". It was used to catch the attention of crew members.

It's actually "Oi" and we use it ALL the time "Oi you, get the kettle on!" "Oi, are you listening?" et al...
