were selfish and closeminded? I mean people right in there when katrina hit. I have talked to people out there who are still recovering and there is not much sympathy for people in suffering.

I think the mayor of NO and the Governor of LA missed the boat on Katrina. Seems like a lot of ineptitude happened there and is still going on. Nagin even got re-elected, sheesh.

The people will have to look out for themselves, that's all there is to it.

Part of the problem is human limitation. A few weeks ago, there was a well publicized attempt in NO to hire untrained construction workers, starting at $20 an hour. ONE PERSON SHOWED UP.

A couple miles north of I-10/I-12 on I-59 there is a rest stop on the south bound side. The roof on the back of the restroom building is still damaged, and covered with a tarp, a year later. When I came through there last Friday, I made a point to go check it. They just can't do any more, both for materials and labor limits. That is a few miles north of NO, but the whole area is in need of more workers.

I don't think many people grasp what it means to have so many houses damaged that 100,000 of 200,000 original inhabitants still are unable to move home. It takes months of work to build ONE house, by a group of people. When there are tens of thousands of houses damaged, it takes a very large number of people to repair and make those houses suitable for living in.

Not to mention the great amount of materials. There just aren't enough people and there aren't enough materials to do the job, no matter how good a job officials might do.

As far as sympathy, as the old saying goes, with a quarter and a bucket of sympathy, you can park in front of the liquor store for 15 minutes.

"those officials in the south were selfish and closeminded"

you will have to be more specific. it was a disaster, and the entire reason fema exists is so there will be resources entering a stricken state, rather than the state hit by a hurricane trying to function through flooding and horror.

my family is from new orleans. the city is not a well-run one, to be true, but regardless of what the officials there were doing, there was more to be done at all levels of government. still is.

I'm not sure what you're suggesting. "Selfish and closed minded" about ...what??? WE had a LOT of Katrina evacuees here in our community, and I found MANY of THEM to be very, very selfish and rude even after months had passed. Granted, they had lost a lot, but to endlessly DEMAND that the government and all of us somehow "owed" them a new, cost-free-from-now-on lifestyle was way TOO much. Where does personal responsibility come into play?
Another thing: As soon as many of the evacuees had been given money to buy food and pay rents with, they went out and spent it all on TVs and motorcycles. (Strange combination, I know, but that's what I personally saw). So, when the rent was due, guess what? They were apparently "victims" of the govenment not giving them enough free money.
I have all the sympathy in the world for those people, and was glad to have helped out, but after enough of being spit upon, cursed at, called every name in the book, disrespected, and insulted endlessly...well...a little closed-mindedness is not too hard to understand. Only about 20% of the evacuees in our community ever went out and actively trieds to get a job. When the churches & other groups organized to create temporary jobs for them, most looked upon this with horror. Many were genuinely angered. They did NOT expect to have to DO anything after being evacuated...they just expected an endless free ride...for, apparently, years to come.

So before casting any judgements...you need to really get the facts from all sides.

The mayor was stupid as hell. My dad went to a seminar(he's an electrical enginieer) and they were trying to figure out how to rebuild the city. The mayor said, "We're gonna get the white people and the black people to work together to build new orleans back, and we're gonna keep the mexicans out."
He's a dumbass.
I think that the people who didn't get out and tried to ride the storm out were stupid too.
