Tell the client to exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes each day (e.g. walking) at least three hours before bedtime. Eat pasta or other light carbohydrate meal for dinner. Drink a cup of Sleepytime Tea before bedtime, or take a long, warm bubble bath before bed.

First I can not give medication. So the next step I'd take is to tell the patient that in today's society things have gotten stressful and hard with kids and Work, everyday life. I'd first ask my patient what their lifestyle is like? Then I would work with that. If they work all day long and they still can't sleep I'd say to them ...It's really OK, when your Body gets tired enough, it will sleep. In the meantime....Exercise, eat right, eat fruits and Lots of fiber, drink about a 1/2 Gallon of water a day. And if they are unhealthy, same goes for them, only take it much more easy. If you hurt to much to sleep then stay awake. Your body will sleep when it's tired! This is common since. Everyones Body will finally sleep when it get's tired enough. In the mean time, do something you need to do while your awake. Like answer Yahoo Questions. Or Pray! Now you know why I'm no Doctor. That's It! God Bless you!

The suggestions people are leaving all sound decent (take a bath, have a warm glass of milk, etc...) The bottom line is that you probably have too much on your mind and you need to relax.

The behavior you need to focus on is anxiety and the modification has to relieve that. This modification occurs by your personal preference. Whatever it is that calms you down, something that you like to do, is what will help you. That is where these suggestions come from... people can suggest you anything, but it is ultimately what is an anxiety calmer for you, not others.

also, the term is psychology majors, not psychologist major =)

I think it would be most helpful for the Dr. to help the client by determining the underlying cause of the insomnia, and then work on the cause. Perhaps just some customary counseling may help ease the person's insomnia.

Take a warm bath. Drink a warm glass of milk. Free your mind off of all worries and problems. Meditate. Pray. Read a book. Watch Letterman on TV- he's boring. Have sex. Exercise.
