big floating rocks in the galaxy

Asteroid is a general term for any piece of space rock, and is not confined to the so-called Asteroid belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter.

There are several classes of Earth crossing asteroids that have nothing to do with the Asteroid belt.

Generally, asteroids are thought to be leftover debris from the formation of the Solar System, though those in the Asteroid belt are believed to be a fragmented proto-planet.

Also, there is no doubt that many asteroids are, like many meteoroids, leftovers from spent comets, once their gases have been burned off by the sun.

asteroids are a band of rocks between Mars and Jupiter some believe that it used to be a planet that exploided a long time ago it is even been reported to have had a name I'm not sure what it was but it was something like Persopheny or pinelopy something like that. Its also a game that I used to play back in the 70s.

Asteroids are chunks of "natural" [as opposed to stuff we put into space with rockets] space debris - some are like rocks you find laying around, some are mostly iron [speculated to be the source of iron for the first tools].

They can be inside Pluto's orbit or outside it - that does not matter, because some of those close to us now came from inter-galactic [between galaxies] space, or inter-stellar [between our sun and some other star] space.

Asteroids may also be the remains of comets, after all the ice has been blown away by the solar wind.

Asteroids fall to earth every day - then they are called meteors, and after they land are called meteorites. Most are dust-sized, but very few are more than baseball size or larger.

They're basically like rock and metal objects that are in space. They mainly orbit between Mars and Jupiter.
