My home's exterior currently has wood siding and I'm thinking about replace it with stucco because it can raise value into the house and also solidifies the wall. What are the advantage and disadvantage to this process and where can I get more "how-to" infomation on this DIY project? Please advice...

Well-maintained wood, or brick have a much higher aesthetic value than stucco. You might look into replacing you wood siding with a cement-fiber siding material (Jame Hardie is one mfr, there are others as well.) You can get the look of clapboard siding, or even shingles. The material lasts for ever and can be installed by homeowers as well as contractors.

I have not done stucco, and I don't think it is a DIY project. To do it properly, you need to install a waterproof membrane (typically felt paper) and a screen lath to hold the stucco. Some building codes might require you to build a shear wall (plywood or OSB and seismic hold downs) on some of the exterior walls.

Then you have to apply 3 coats of stucco - a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat. You need scaffolding all around the house, and tons of sand and cement, as well as stucco mixer. Most stucco crews have several workers - one to mix the stucco, and carry it to the several guys apply the stucco. If you did this yourself, you would spend 1/2 your time mixing stucco, 25% carrying materials around, and the rest of the time applying stucco to the walls.

Stucco provides a 'solid' wall, but it's not a structural wall. Foundation settling and earthquakes can cause cracks to appear, both vertically and horizontally.

Look into cement-fiber siding and you might agree it is better looking and a definite candidate for DIY.

You will have to remove the siding, if you go over it the stucco will crack due to the movement of the siding behind it. then wrap the studwall with stucco wire whch is a paper with chicken wire and stucco moulding around all the openings and on the corners. And you use nails that allow space between the paper and the wire. The paper and wire need to be really streched so it is tight and won't flex. Over that is a coating of "mud" that has to be trowled on so it goes around the wire, then another coat of "mud" to give a smooth and even surface and then another coat of "mud" with the color in it. Colored stucco will hold it's color for years and needs no maintenance other than to keep it clean, it will stain from dirt and other elements just like any other surface will.

Stucco looks like crap and it falls off eventually. I can't possible see how, in today's market, that will raise the value of the house. Go with vinyl siding.
