being afraid and still having the strength to do something that most people wouldn't do...

a completely scrawny kid sees someone that's bigger and cooler than him being picked on and beat up, but still stands up for that person (although that person may have picked on him before)

a NY police officer volunteers to go inside a building that they know won't be standing much longer, just to try to save some people they don't know... going beyond the call of duty (can you tell i've seen the WTC movie?)
