First thing is to take the dead crab outside near an ants nest and let the ant eat out the remaining meat inside the crab.

The ants will not harm the shell and they do a great job of removing the flesh that could stink your house out. Now all you do is give it a warm soapy wash.

This is an old trick that's works.

Been there, done that. Soak it in a very strong solution of 20 MULE TEAM BORAX and water for four days. Use a whole big box. The longer the better. Stir it once a day. The Borax will settle to the bottom. Take it out and put it on the roof for a week if you can. Give a sniff test. Leave there another week if necessary.CAUTION, the Borax will firm everything up. Have the tail where you want when soaking.

Taxidermist take fish and freeze dry them. That's what most "stuffed" fish are. They put animals in the freez dryer too. They leave them in there for a few weeks or months. Take them out, and the animals/fish are frozen like a rock forever. The freeze dry method sucks all the moisture out. Call one up, and I think they would freeze dry a horseshoe crab. I am not sure how much it costs though.

A horseshoe crab is a different form of seashell. You don't really have to do anything to it, but if you are going to keep it in a home where children or pets might get hold of it, you might want to dip it in boiling water for a few minutes to kill any bacteria.
