How many have noticed that gas prices, which have soared above $3.00 all year, have taken a very convenient (and steep) downturn right before the November elections, when the Republicans are on the verge of losing their majority in Congress? Are Bush's oil company friends trying to make the economy look good by lowering gas prices for a few months until the elections are over, in hope that it will make voters feel better about the GOP incumbents?

Sure sounds like it, especially also considering the capture of Saddam right as the Democratic primaries were starting, possibly throwing the race from Dean to Kerry, and the killing of Zarqawi right as Bush's poll numbers were at their lowest.

However, I see a lot of factors going in to make the prices drop: the paucity of hurricanes this year, the end of the driving season, the Iran situation failing to come to a head, the Israel-Hezbollah war simmering down, and the discovery of oil in the Gulf of Mexico (Jack 2), which I think is fiddlesticks - fuels our nation for about half a year at the most.

These factors could last until the end of the year. But then prices could rise dramatically. World civilization may be nearing a point where it can't provide enough oil to meet world demand any more; something called "peak oil", when the yearly production of oil peaks. I looked at the curve of supply for the past few years (from the EIA) and found that oil production has leveled off for almost a year at 84 million barrels a day. Could it be that peak oil has come and that shortages are only a year or two away?

Sorry, but voters aren't so stupid to believe that a one month dip in gas prices will make them forget why they hate the Republicans.

The drop in gas prices isn't suspicious at all. For example, initially BP announced it would turn off the spigot on 400,000 barrels of oil per day on Alaska's North Slope to repair corroded pipes. However, the company later reduced the curtailment to 200,000 barrels per day and indicated it may get the entire production back on line sooner.

At the same time, refiners are beginning to produce the winter blend of gasoline and some companies may be lowering prices to reduce their summer gasoline inventory.

DON'T GET ME STARTED! Why do they say gas prices could be going up and BAM! Seven Cents to Ten Cents immediate increase at the pumps. Then they talk about prices possibly going down to $2.00 a gallon, and I haven't seen a penny drop from the prices here locally in Salt Lake City Utah.

And, yes, it couldn't be better timing. Republicans know how to yank the populations chain. And most darn fools will fall for it.

Gas usually drops in price after labor day- but it is convenient to get voters calmed down about oil just before election day.

Republicans will continue to do anything to stay in power. I would not be suprised to hear that Big Oil has lowered gas prices to help Bush and his idiots.

After I learn to play an instrument, and learn another language, I want to build a biofuel processing unit in my garage and fill up once a week on canola oil.

Not necessarily. Summer driving season has just ended, and there's no major holidays for a while. So the demand is less, hence the price drops.
