Or am I just weird? I'm sure it's a recognised psychological thing though, like looking down from a great height and imagining yourself jumping off, or picking up a knife and thinking about stabbing yourself. What's all that about?

sure, all that stuff normally comes out in dreams, anything you repress that as a member of society you can't do, you will have fantasies or thoughts of.
that's fine, but if you don't just let it go but obsess over it, that could be ocd.

I've never felt he urge to throw my belongings away or stab myself. However, when I walk along the pier that goes right out into the ocean and its a calm day and the sea is like a green carpet, well, I've been drawn towards the edge. It's sort of hypnotic. Ive never felt the urge to jump in, but, just to get nearer to it. It's a scary feeling when you realise that you are actually moving nearer to the edge. This is probably similar to what you are talking about, well, the heights part. The knife bit, no, I'd be careful about that one.

I don't get the urge to throw things in but I do get irrationally paranoid that I will drop them. If I'm on a ferry and standing by the side I have to keep checking my pockets to make sure everything's still there. I even have to make sure my shoes are on securely, like they ever fall off?

I know what you mean. If I'm at a train station for example, and the train comes I imagine myself jumping onto the tracks. I reckon it must have something to do with our liking of being scared and risk taking. People like watching scary films, some do extreme sports, some gamble, some start fights. When confronted with danger or risk our instinctual "flight or fight" response is triggered and our body releases or makes certain chemicals like epiphedrine (might have that wrong) noradrenalin, maybe even dopamine (serotonin too for all I know). These increase our heartrate, make us alert, give us energy, heighten our senses and other stuff as a way to give us an advantage in times of danger. (Anyone who's taken certain stimulant drugs which work by releasing and inhibiting the reuptake of these chemicals knows the sensation) It's probably something that's evolved with us and as the average human in a country like this one isn't usually in mortal peril we may go looking for ways to get this thrill.

But I don't know, I could just be talking rubbish.

At least you only think about it. For me it's worse; I actually can't pass a river without throwing something into it, like some sort of compulsive disorder. I get a strange kick out of seeing my ipod slowing being sucked into the depths along with all my lovely music, and my lunch box with delicious raw sardines and mini jaffa cakes. Now I have very few material possessions left it means I have to sacrifice others.
Oh by the way, I'm going for a nice walk along the Thames later.... want to come?

Well I understand what you are saying but generally humans have a mechanism of self preservation. This entails keeping yourself alive by any means nececarry. I admit there have been times that I would have loved to throw my phone and self over a bridge but when you think about it you only ge one chance. Why not go out when you are meant to not when you feel down or deperssed. It is your life and your choice but if you are not happy then the only person that can help yourself is you, seek help if it really is as bad as you make it out to be.

I lived in San Francisco for many years, drove across the Golden Gate Bridge every night and morning. One afternoon, traffic came to a screeching halt, and a man in a grey suit, just two cars ahead of me,jumped out of his car, then flung his briefcase,a coat, then his wristwatch over the bridge, then jumped after them, right down into San Francisco Bay.This all happened in about 5 seconds.I always wondered if he changed his mind about half way down!! No I never consider throwing anything into a river!

Good question. When we are in the car, my son gets the urge to chuck things out of the window, which I suppose is similar. And whenever I'm walking near an edge, I always get the urge to jump. Sometimes it manifests itself physically, in that my legs twitch, desperate to run for the jump! We're all weirdos in one way or another!

I totally understand that! Yes. I often feel the urge to leap off such heights as well. It's a real struggle sometimes to convince myself not to jump off these large buildings/bridges etc because I know it will be curtains!

I am exactly like that. Everytime I cross a bridge I want to throw something or someone in and when I am at a great height I always imagine myself or others falling..everyone thinks i'm weird saying stuff like that so I'm glad to know there are others like me.
