I have a 12oz. solution of 3.5% alcohol and a 1.7oz. solution of 12% alcohol. What is the percentage of alcohol in their mixture?

12(3.5) + 1.7(12) = (12+1.7)(x)
Answer: x%

Here is how you would handle this: When you mix these two together let x equal the percentage of the mixture that is 3.5% alcohol( 12/13.7) and y equal the percentage of the mixture that is 1.7% alcohol (1.7/13.7). Here is the formula which will show you the new percentage: X*3.5% + Y *1.7%

Good for you.

Find out how much alchohol is in each separately (by multiplying total by percentage), and add those together.

Add up the total volume of the final mixture.

Divide the amount of alchohol by the total amount of mixture.

Don't forget to move the decimal point over for a percentage!



If you actually wanted a formula...

Let there be "a" units of an "x" percent solution and "b" units of "y" percent.

100(.01ax+.01by)/(a+b) is the percentage of the final solution.
