Some of it has to do with the fact that is it [marriage] more acceptable to society than "shacking up".
The other thing is the sense of security which it offers both legally and otherwise. Very few people realise that much of what they believe about marriage is nothing short of a fairy tale. The is no happily ever after. It just does not exist.
Personally marriage isn't an idea I'm in love with, if it happens it happens, if it doesn't it doesn't.

Raised on stories of Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty.
It is expected from an early age that a knight in shining armor will make life right.
Boys are raised to mow the lawn an fix the plumbing - they need the above characters to the rest of the stuff.
They aren't looking for partners but rescuers.

I am totally against marriage. I will never get married, I don't see the point. It is just a social thing. Most girls are taught that is the thing to do to impress their parents.
