I've got a 283 chevy in my 81 chevy k10 pickup, and the harmonic balancer keeps coming loose. It doesn't use a bolt, so how do I get it to stay on?

I swear to god it has no threads for a bolt,,I acutally spent like 23 dollars on an ARP fastener only to find out there were no threads in the crank for a bolt...I found out that some sbc cranks don't use bolts, but I didn't find an answer for how they stay on...

Yes, it is a 283 in an 81 k10. It was an upgrade from the 4.1....It was stroked with a 327 crank...maybe that will help, maybe not

Hmm I think only the early 283/327s had a press-fit balancer. If its a late 60s 327 crank, check for a bolt hole. Check the balancer for a crack on the snout, or excessive wear. Check the crank snout for wear. I have used the red loctite in the past to hold the balancer on a 235 chevy, it was a press fit as well. Clean all oil and dirt off of crank snout and inside of balancer. Apply loctite to parts and tap it home with a dead blow hammer. Let it sit overnight. It'll hold as long as balancer is good and you dont over-revv the engine.

Not having a bolt is probably why it keeps falling off !!!

Actually, it may be held on with a large nut or maybe 3-4 smaller bolts. I suggest seating the balancer properly then use Loctite to hold the bolts in place. Oh yeah, torque the hell out of it !!!!

Sounds like you need to pull it off and replace the little
press-tite spacer that keeps it on...
Perhaps a little lok-tite ?
Replace it with a 350 ??
