you should keep it as close to the eyelash line as possible. get it in between the lashes so there are no white spots. It's too much when it's too thick and uneven.

For everyday use I would use a neutral liner (gray, bronze, brown) on preferably the upper lid but definitely not both the upper and the lower lid.
Now if you're talking going out, have some fun with jet black or some wild colors.

i have like 8 tubes of avon glimmersticks. in all didfferent colors. then i have 3 sephora eye pencils. and then 2 of the giant eye crayon. so i guess any more than that is alot
