I had a formal dance/party thing coming up this winter, and i am getting a tattoo on my shoulders. The dress is a halter one, so my shoulders will be bare- exposing my tattoo, unless i postpone the date that i get the tattoo done. and the dress is champagne colored...

this is similar to the image that will be on my shoulders http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/kirstie10/?action=view¤t=singlesparrow.jpg and it will have a banner, going from beak to beak that says "Fear is the heart of love".

i would just like to know if the tattoo would look bad during the occasion. if you were me, would you post pone the date? I think the image is very pretty and girly, however...

I'd say that if you put sufficient thought into the tattoo, and you've already committed to the idea that you'll be wearing it for the rest of your life, then by all means, get it done.

When...that's another story. If it's going to be fewer than 3 weeks before the party, I'd advise getting it afterward. If it's over 3 weeks between them, go for it.
It's a foregone conclusion that you'll attract attention with it. People always gravitate to the people who do things that they themselves are too timid to do...tattoos, large piercings, off-the-wall clothing, etc. It's also likely that there will be one or more inconsiderate clod who'll insist on touching it without asking. Having a fresh tattoo that's not fully healed (and maybe a little after) being manhandled by others, some in questionable states of sobriety, is going to be aggravating, annoying, and if the tattoo is still fresh and possibly tender, downright painful.

For as long as you have your tattoo, you'll hear from the nay-sayers telling you how pretty, scary, trashy, criminal, whatever, your tattoo is. It doesn't matter if you're in a dress or shorts and a tank top...don't let that deter you if you've got your heart set on it.

It's funny that you should ask this question because I was just talking about this the other day. I was at a wedding reception and this woman walked in with a halter dress and it was cute until she turned around and I saw the tat on her back. I thought to myself, "YUCK! There's no way to make a tat look glamorous."

I personally don't think they look good ESPECIALLY in formal settings. Don't postpone the date because there will be other formal events you'll go to in the future and what will you do then? I would really reconsider getting the tat...but that's not the question is it? Sorry. LOL.

Since you are questioning it, I would advise you to wait on getting the tattoo until after the event.

Usually, if the tattoo is small, many people will think it's cute.

Give yourself time to get used to having the tattoo and the comments you will receive before putting it on display in a formal dress setting.

A fancy dress party can be nerve-wracking enough as it is.

Me being the religious type, I would put "God is the heart of love".

Who needs fear.....unless it is "The fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom".

Psalm 111:10

Good luck and have fun.

Decide now, If you are worried about the Tattoo showing for your next date maybe you are not sure you should do it or not. Because once it is there it is there for good. You can move it, hip belly, lower back or put it on your shoulder and not wear strap dress. OR get the tattoo and show it off. So all I am saying is you need to think it over NOW before you get it so you proud and not regretful. I don't have one but I do think they are cool, and it must be YOUR decision.

If the tattoo means alot to you then do your thing girl.If you feel it may be a problem for someone take a pretty champane colored shaw that can drape your shoulders and help take some bite out of the cold. Then you can feel out the situation and decide if you feel comfortable leaving your cover-up off.A silky or satin shaw not no knitted thing.

What happens the first dance after you actually GET the tattoo. If you're that unsure, don't get the tatttoo. Or put it somewhere less noticeable. Otherwise, you can always try to find some coverup but then why get the bloody tattoo?

first of all, i hope you understand what "fear is the heart of love" means...

you're probably getting it from that death cab for cutie song, "i will follow you into the dark.."

anyway, the verse of the song goes,
catholic school, as vicious a roman rule
i got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black {a NUN, ...duh}
and i held my tongue, as she told me, "son, fear is the heart of love"
so i never went back.
etc
etc
etc

ANYWAY... the nun was trying to teach the schoolboy (or writer of the song) the lesson in the Bible that says God is love, and you must fear God. thus, "fear is the heart of love." in other words, if you do not fear God, you do not love him. that's why FEAR is the HEART(foundation) of LOVE(for God in this case).

soooo yeaa... if you already knew this and you're completely fine with it, then go for it. personally, whenever I see sparrow tattoos, i immediately think of Mark Mcgrath, singer of Sugar Ray (as do many other people). .

sparrows are really NOT that feminine in my opinion, but that's just me.
just think though- this won't be the only time in your life that you'll want to wear a dress that reveals your shoulders.

if you decide to wait, it's only to make this the one last night with a sexy dress one last time look good before you get the tattoo.

you're decisionnn..
doo doo doo doo doo doo dooo
(jeopardy song)

I wouldn't postpone the date! I have seven tats and a few piercings and I love showing them off =) You will have paid a bit of money for the tat, why not show it off? It's very pretty! If other people don't like it, they don't have to look at it!

you're always going to have that tattoo and i'm sure that's not going to be the only formal event you go to. i'm sure you can carry the tattoo well. if you're comfortable with having your tattoo show in a dress then do it. the tattoo seems like it'll be nice though so no worries :)
