well if you mean that the length of rafters are 8 feet then it would really depend on the pitch of the roof, space of the rafters and grade of the lumber. on a roof slope 4 to 12 or higher a 2x4 at 16" oc can span 9 feet if it is grade 1. if it was me I'd use the 2x6 at 16" oc build it strong and it will last for years.

This is up my alley I'm a SPIB lumber inspector 1st 2 by 4 is really actually 1 3/4 by 3 3/4" Same as a 2 by 6 is, 5 3/4 The Max for our lumber is 20ft lengths then 18'-16'-14'-12'-10'-8' Watch Out some lumber yards have crooked lumber and un-equal lengths make sure their straight!!!! Make sure you have enough pitch on your roof or it will leak!!!

What's the "Pitch" of the roof, that makes a difference. The flatter the roof the heavier the lumber needed. What"s the "Roof Load" in your area (snow, wind, roofing materials), these things all add up. To be safe I'd use the 2" X 6" rafters on an 8' span set at 16" on center.

A 2x4 is less than 2 and 4. Also a 2x6 is smaller. But the lengths will still be 8 feet, if not slightly more.

If you build trusses to the dimensions you need and space them at 2 foot on center for the length of the roof, you can use 2 x 4's for this- they will need to be " bridged " between the trusses and tied together at the top with a "rat board". This will work fine for your project.Make sure you use truss brackets that attach to the truss and to the wall below, so a strong wind doesn't blow off your new roof.

I have 2X4 and 2X6 in my garage that are 10 feet long. I think they may also come in 12 foot lengths, if that is what you mean.

Not sure what you mean. 2 X 4's come in different lengths, 10', 12', 14', etc.
