I had no problems until I took the vehicle in for an oil change. The transfer case is located in the same spot as the oil well (or whatever you call it). The light on the knob no longer comes on and neither does the indicator light on the instrument panel. I have heard there is a way to reset the 4 wheel drive, is this true?

The Best advice would be to take it to a dealership near by, but if you wont do that then take your owners manual look at your fuse set up see if maybe the fuse went out. If that doesn't work and you know a lot about the vehicle remove the dash plate and make sure your connection is good. If the wires look shot replace the switch if they are loose tighten them up otherwise check your transfer case.

The term "Four wheel drive" has probably misled the general public. All the car makers offer 4 wheel drive vehicles have different designs. Some done mechanically and some electronically by computer. Some designs are all time 4 wheel drive and some are partial time, and surprisingly there are some "momentarily" switched to 4 wheel drive when needed and switched back to 2 wheel drive when back to normal driving. Go to your car maker's dealer to get more information befor you make a move.

Do not remember much about which system is in that. Put it in 4 by and have someone drive slow and se if your front shaft is turning. If not then look for a fuse or something to actuate the buttons for your 4x4. If it does the on your front diff there is either a vacuum or electric central axle disconnect that is not engaging. look for the bad wire or vacuum hose or something else wrong with it. Alot of people end up swapping these over to a posi lock system and getting rid of the elec or vacuum cad system. Go register at www.coloradok5.com for gm questions like this or someone like snowman that frequently answers questions at www.fourwheeler.com has his own site that is in his signature on his replys. www.top4x4.com has links to all kinds of 4x4 web sites that have forums with people that know these trucks well.

Sounds to me like someone unplugged something. Take it back to where you had the oil changed and have them look and see if the wires may have been knocked off when the drained the oil.

Everybody is a mechanic now?

That is an incredibly vague description of the problem with absolutely no helpful data to aid in diagnosing it.

i have a full size Chevy silverado pick up, and it is common for the actuating contole switch located on your front axle housing to go bad. go to an auto parts store or dealer and pick one up for resonable money.it's pretty easy to install also.
