It has to be Jimi Hendrix. Why? Well listen to guitarists before Jimi Hendrix came on the scene, then listen to guitarists afterwards. His influence changed the whole guitar sound. Nobody ever used the ELECTRIC guitar better than him. You get guitar players now who play lightening scales. But so what? Where is the musical content in that? With practice, most people can play fast scales but it's just the male equivalent of seeing who can piss up the wall the highest! What's the point? That is musical autism at its best. Most people only hear Jimi's popular stuff like Voodoo Chile or Purple Haze. Both great songs, but try to get a listen to 'Midnight' or 'Pali Gap' - those songs are what you would call 'movies for your ears'.

Jimmi Hendrix without a doub! All the modern guitar players are based on the heavy riffs and agressivity of James Marshall Hendrix. Picture this: on the beggining of each guitar player you mentioned (Blackmore, Page, Iommi, Vai, etc.) they used to play covers from Hendrix.

I'm assuming you mean Rock guitarist: Hendrix, then Stevie Ray Vaughan, Van Halen, Dimebag Darrell then Jimmy Page, in my opinion.

to categorize one player as the greatest of all time is impossible. There are way too many different styles of guitar. One may be good at jazz or blues but not the best doing rock. you should ask who is the best in each style.

To be honest if you can overlook the stage persona Ted Nugent is as good as any guitar player I have ever seen. Listen to the Double Live Gonzo album and you will see what I mean

Hendrix is the best bar none. Only Brian May comes very close second.

Jimmy Page, without a dout. Hendrix was brilliant, but I can't help feeling that his style would have become novel and dated in time.
