The northern border with Chinese-occupied Tibet is the Himalayas and has most of the highest peaks including Annapurna, K2 and Everest, permanently covered with snow (except where the slope or the wind is too much!). The south, though still high above the Ganges Plain, is relatively tropical and fertile.

The people speak Nepalese and are mostly Hindu, indeed it is the only country where Hinduism is the official religion (because India is officially secular).

It is a poor country -- for example, some people's journey to a town and a clinic starts with a walk of ten rough miles to get to the nearest bus-stop. Most people are subsistence farmers.

It is of course a beautiful country and trekking there is a pastime popular among a significant number of Westerners. This tourism is a major source of Nepal's export income.

The best-known Nepalese in the West are "sherpas" (mountain guides who will, for a fee, carry your pack for you) and "Gurkhas" (Nepalese mercenaries in the British army).

And the best news! Nepalese have in the past decade taken to playing cricket. Nepal has risen strikingly rapidly through the ranks of the minor cricketing nations and will soon be in the top 20 in the world. Cricket is gaining popularity while football is declining!!!!
