Absolutely not a gas guzzler, and quite the contrary.
We have a 2001 model company car that gets 30+ on the hwy. and has given no trouble mechanically to date.
I do not know much about the new body style Impala, but it should get the same or better. The old body style, 2004 and below, are a good car and a good buy.
2004's I've seen advertised are ranging $12k to $16K with around 20K miles on the cars.
Very good car for a cheap price, it would seem to me.

what year? Almost all car rating agencies including the govt. have MPG estimates, especially on the newer cars. The old Impalas by today's standards were gas guzzlers. Best on an old one was about 12 MPG. The newer ones should do at least 20 MPG. all depends on engine size and driving habits etc.

In 2003, you could choose between the 3.4L V6 or the 3.8L V8. the 3.4 is rated over 30mpg on the highway and the 3.8 is 29 mpg on the highway. I own a 2006 Impala LS (new body style) with the 3.5L Flexfuel engine and I got 35.6 mpg (DIC) on the interstate running 72 mph with the cruise control on. Not bad for a full size sedan.

29 mpg highway 21 town with the 3.8 engine slightly higher 23/30 with the 3.4 engine good car strong enough in a wreck. All GM "w" body cars Olds Intrigue, Impala, Lumina, Grand Prix and Buick Regal. Some are supercharged 240 hp and still get 29 mpg

masterchiefcuda is right, any car is a gas guzzler if your foot is to the floor all the time.... just get a big fan and mount it to the roof! you know like those air boats or hover crafts..

i just bought a 2002 and i think its great but on the older models you have to watch out for the intake manifold they had a problem with it and as far as guzzling gas I get 600km to the tank that's highway and city
